June 10 - 19, 2008:
ISRAEL (CANCELLED)

Leader: Mrs. Ruth Gerson,

Life Member of the Siam Society

Category: Study Trips

Situated at a critical road juncture of the ancient Middle East, the Land of Israel at the confluence of cultures gave birth to the monotheistic religions of the Western world. In Israel, where history and geography are closely intertwined, we visit the remains of the old Canaanite cities that dominated the country 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, the archeological digs of Israelite cities of 3,000 to 2,000 years ago and the many Roman and Byzantine historical sites dating back 2,000 years. We tour Jerusalem with it’s many holy sites, see landmarks mentioned in the Bible and travel to more recent Crusaders and Ottoman sites.

The unique Dead Sea Scrolls, the 2,000 years old texts of the Qumran sect including the full book of the prophet Isaiah and fragments of other scriptures are exhibited at Israel’s Museum in Jerusalem. Nearby is Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial housing exhibits and documents related to the fate of the Jews of Europe during WWII. From Jerusalem we take a short drive to the mineral rich Dead Sea, the lowest spot on earth and visit Massada, the formidable desert fortress of King Herod.

The trip is planned as an exposure to the small but historically rich country of Israel. Seeing history first hand as a continuum of thousands of years of human experience may help gain insights into the current complexity of the Middle East, beyond the typical media headlines.
