2009:
A CULTURAL TOUR OF THE KINGDOM OF JORDAN

Leader: Mr. Barent Springsted

Honorary Secretary, The Siam Society

Category: Study Trips

The history of Jordan is one of invasion and conquest. Historically, Jordan for the most part has been a collection of city-states, but the strategic geographic location of the area ensured that all the great early civilizations passed through this land. The Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Turks and Crusaders all helped to shape the history of the region. They carried out trade, built cities and fought their wars here, leaving behind rich cultural influences.

Jordan today is a relatively small country. Its total area, including the West Bank, is about 98,000 sq. km. It is only about 430 km. from Ramtha in the north to Aqaba in the south. From Amman to the furthest point of interest in the east, Azraq, is just 130 km. Jordan today is comprised of four major regions: the Jordan Valley, the West Bank Plateau, the East Bank Plateau and the desert. The population is more than four million.

The Siam Society has organized a eight-day study trip to Kingdom of Jordan, during which time we will visit the World Heritage cultural site of Petra and Jerash, and outstanding example of a rich Roman provincial town and one of the best preserved of the cities of the Decapolis.
