Professor Michael Smithies has asked to step down as Editor of the Journal of the Siam Society. He will be very sadly missed in this role.

Michael agreed to take on the job when the JSS was not at its best. It had fallen two years behind in publication, and had several other problems. He undertook to edit a few issues and get it back on schedule. In fact he has been responsible for eight issues in all. He not only got the journal back on time, but has been responsible for many other innovations. The current size, design, and overall look of the journal was established under his editorship and is now standard. Michael introduced a new section, ‘From the Archives,’ reprinting some articles from early issues, as well as material gleaned from the archives.

Most important of all, the standard of the contents of the JSS has clearly risen during his tenure. When the Society conducted a survey of members’ opinions on the journal a few years ago, most responded ‘Change nothing!’ That’s a true accolade.

The Society is very, very grateful to Professor Michael Smithies for his efforts and achievements as editor of the JSS, and is very happy that Michael has agreed to continue as an Advisor to the publication.

The Society is very pleased to announce Mr. Kim W. Atkinson as the new editor of JSS. Kim is no stranger to the role. He was Honorary Editor from 1977 to 1980. The Society is very lucky that Kim has just returned to Bangkok with his family after a career as a professional editor and publications manager.

Kim has a BA from Harvard and MS from the University of Hawai’i. He first came to Thailand as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1966, and came again in 1971 to work for UN ESCAP and the Nation group. He was actively involved with the Society, and served on the Council from 1972 to 1981. He then left for a roving life working as an editor, mainly for UN organizations.
