Dr. Chris Baker

Chris Baker was born in the UK, has a PhD from Cambridge University, and taught Asian history and politics at Cambridge in a previous life. In 1979, he moved to Thailand, and worked as technical director of a research firm, managing director of the leading ad agency, and marketing director for Johnnie Walker. Now he works independently as a writer, editor, and researcher.

With Pasuk Phongpaichit, he has written A History of Thailand, 2005; Thailand: Economy and Politics, 1995, second edition 2002, which won the 1997 national research prize and has been published in Japanese; Thailand’s Boom and Bust, 1998; Thailand’s Crisis, 2000; Thaksin: The Business of Politics in Thailand, 2004; and Thai Capital after the Asian Crisis, 2008.

They have translated works by Pridi Banomyong, leader of the 1932 revolution, Chatthip Nartsupha, King Rama V, Nidhi Eoseewong, and the Communist Party of Thailand. Currently they are working on a translation of the epic poem, Khun Chang Khun Phaen.

My experience includes contributions to a variety of conservation related ventures in Asia, Latin America, and the United States. In this regard, I have works with government, Nongovernmental, and academic capacities.

Immediately prior to accepting my current position overseeing WWF’s activities in Thailand, I was part of the management team for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) Support Program, implemented by Wildlife Alliance (มูลนิธิเพื่อนป่า)

I have also managed field crews charged with collecting and analyzing conservation and biodiversity data in Southeast Asia, Ecuador, and North America. My background includes three years of national park related work with the Peace Corps, field teaching on applied conservation techniques, and a Fulbright sponsored doctorate in tropical ecology.

Addicted to photography I wrote and took the iconography by myself for a book called “Le Palais du Roi” in Phnom Penh. Over the years I developed a network of friendship and support to many Museums and organizations. Guimée (Guimet?) Museum, where I am a donor, San Francisco Museum of Legion d’Honneur and The Young, Zurich Museum Foundation Baur, E.F.E.O. (École Française d’Extrême Orient) for which I am a donor. Support for exhibition including next exhibition of Daravati Art in Guimet Museum Paris Jan. 2009.

Since I began my overseas career in Thailand in 1967 as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Maesod, Tak, I have had the opportunity to work and live in nine Southeast and South Asia countries as well as a rather long cold year in the Baltics. I am a lifelong student of the history and languages of Southeast Asia. My major skills would be as a manager and organizer in a now – Western environment, of people and activities which lead to a positive outcome. The most new ording years of my carees were spent as a Peace Corps Director in five different countries.

Ms. Anne Sutherland

Present occupation and position:
Retired Canadian Foreign Service and United Nations. Council Member and Honorary Librarian 2004-2008, Library volunteer since 2001 and member since 2000.   Board member and Project Director of the Learning for Living Study project of the Ban Reng Khai Foundation, member of the National Museum Volunteers, the Thai Textile Society, the Foreign Correspondents Club, life member of Society Atelier Sarawak in Kuching, and warden for the Canadian Embassy.

Education:
University of Toronto B.Sc.N Graduate work in French Language and Literature at Laval University, Quebec City and University of Toronto. Diploma in Italian, University of Florence and working knowledge of Spanish.

30 year career in international development: 1969-1981 – Canadian International
Development Agency, Ottawa – policy, planning and programme management.
1982-1985 and 1987-1989 – Counsellor (Development ) Canadian High Commissions in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
1989-1997 – UNICEF Representative in the Lao PDR; awarded Friendship Medal by the Lao Government.
Having lived and worked in Asia for 25 years, I am very interested in the preservation and documentation of Asian arts, traditions and culture.
