The Siam Society is pleased to offer to members a very special guided tour of the current Queen Savang Vadhana Museum at Srapathum Palace on Saturday, 25 September 2010 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (15 persons are allowance in each group).

Her Majesty Queen Savang Vadhana, the Queen Grandmother, was born Her Royal Highness Princess Savang Vadhana on 10 September, 1862, to His Majesty King Mongkut, Rama IV, and Somdetch Phra Piyamavadi Sri Bajarindra Mata (Chao Chom Manda Piam). She had five other royal brothers and sisters born of the same mother. During her childhood, the Queen Grandmother received her education in the palace, studying letters and other subjects befitting the education of a princess of the royal court. She was bright and intelligent, with a keen memory.

Throughout her long life, the Queen Grandmother grieved for the loss of many people she loved fondly. Her royal children mostly died at a young age. His Royal Highness Prince Isariyalongkorn died in 1879. Her Royal Highness Princess Vichitra Chiraprabha died in 1881. An unnamed princess died just 3 days after her birth in 1893. And, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajirunhis died suddenly in 1894, at the age of 17. Wounded by these losses, Her Majesty’s health suffered. Even as she began to recover, however, Her Royal Highness Princess Sirabhorn Sobhon and His Royal Highness Prince Sommatiwongse Varodaya, Prince of Sri Dharmaraj, died in 1898 and 1899, respectively. Some consolation was still to come, however. When her youngest son, His Royal Highness Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom, the Prince Father, married Her Royal Highness Princess Sri Nagarindra, the Princess Mother, 3 royal grandchildren were born. The Queen Grandmother was at last able to rejoice once more. Her final royal duty was to perform the marriage ceremony between His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX, and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on 28 April 1950 at Tamnak Yai, Srapathum Palace.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn opened Queen Savang Vadhana Museum at Phra Tamnak Yai, Srapathum Palace on Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Her Royal Highness presented the Museum to His Majesty the King on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King's 80th birthday anniversary. The museum is divided into three areas, each representing a different period in its history.
