Study Trip

Friday, 14 – Sunday, 16 June 2019
Leader: Khun Eileen Deeley, Council Member of the Siam Society

Considered as seat of the earliest Thai kingdom, Sukhothai has been described in the Inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng of 1292 as a flourishing city-state of great bounty and power. “This land of Sukhothai is thriving. There is fish in the water and rice in the fields.  Whoever wants to trade in elephants, so trades.  Whoever wants to trade in silver and gold, so trades.  The king has hung a bell in the opening of the gate. If any commoner in the land has a grievance, he goes and strikes the bell.  The ruler of the kingdom hears the call, examines the case and decides it justly for him. Inside this city there are viharas, there are golden statues of the Buddha, there are monks....”

Indeed, the name "Sukhothai" translates as "the dawn of happiness".  However, this golden era of independence was to last, in its totality, for a brief two hundred years before becoming subsumed by the growing power of Ayutthaya in the central plains.

Today, in this upper central region, vast and extensive ruins of Buddhist sanctuaries dot the landscape, bringing to mind the ancient kingdom's past glory.  Modern museums house fine bronze images, intricate stucco decorative objects that formerly graced sanctuaries, as well as fine celadon ceramics that testify to the kingdom's former vitality and industry.

The Siam Society will travel to Sukhothai and its vice-regal city of Sri Satchanalai, ending at the outpost of Kamphaeng Phet, the "diamond"-walled city and its massive battlements. We will visit the majestic main sanctuaries, with their unique Sukhothai lotus bud finials, as well as surrounding and outlying religious monuments. Local national museums will also feature.
